   Facial Skin Care advice

Cleansing the skin using the correct products is essential. Dirt and grime accumulate on the skin everyday. Make-up particles become stale throughout the day contributing to blemishes and dull looking skin. Cleansing the skin in the morning and in the evening will help keep the skin free of blemishes and allow it to function efficiently.

It is important to use products that will dissolve the natural oils that build up on the surface of the skin. Make-up too must be dissolved correctly and the day's dust, parasites and pollution that all sit on the skin. Cleansing the skin will not mean a lengthy skin care routine. There are a variety of products available, those that can be applied by hand and rinsed off are very popular, especially as they are simple and quick to use. If you are not sure which product to select and have wasted money already, then you need to take advice from a professional.

A Skin Analysis is a detailed consultation about your skin. The Therapist will talk through your skin with you and advise the most suitable products for you to use. Cleansing will be part of a professional facial treatment. Deep cleansing with products formulated for your skin will be used ensuring the skin is free of any particles. This is important as any product or treatment will not be effective if there is surface matter present. So, That expensive anti-wrinkle cream that you apply every night without fail, would probably be more effective if you cleansed your skin first and you would probably use less!

As I do not wear make-up, is it still necessary to cleanse my skin?

Yes. The skin accumulates parasites, dust and dirt from the atmosphere. In addition to this, the skin's natural oils continually secrete onto the surface of the skin. As these accumulate they will trap dead skin cells and create a warm moist environment for the bacteria to grow that causes some breakouts on the skin.

I have used a variety of cleansers and always seem to find my skin becomes blotchy and irritated after use. Do you have any ideas why this is happening?

Ideally your skin should be seen to answer this in detail. However, it would seem that there may be an ingredient in the products that is making your skin sensitive or creating a slight allergic reaction. It may be advisable to try cleansers that are free of lanolin and perfumes as these can create some sensitivity on some skins. In addition to this look at your complete skin care routine as toning the skin and moisturising as vital parts of this every day routine, not to mention the use of exfoliants, scrubs and face masks.

Every skin will benefit from a basic skin care programme provided the correct products are used for the skin type. Professional advice from a Beauty Therapist will help identify the problems and provide the solutions.

Exfoliation refers to the removal of the superficial dead skin cells that cover the surface of the skin. This process is often referred to by the Therapist as desquamation. Our skin sheds millions of dead skin cells every day.

The natural oils of our skin along with the perspiration, make-up and pollution that accumulate on the skin tend to stop this happening so efficiently. So, to keep a healthy, smooth surface to the skin and to ensure bacteria and breakouts do not form, the process must be accelerated with products called exfoliants or scrubs. There are a variety of exfoliants available. One would select a product depending on the skin type to be treated.

There is a huge variety of face masks available to use at home. They vary in texture, ingredients and effect. It is important to use the most suitable for your skin type and the use of an incorrect product may upset the balance of the skin. Examples of some of the basic types of masks available are Clay-based, Non setting/Biological and Peel-off.

Clay based are designed to set on the skin, they are used for deep cleansing as they draw out impurities absorbing surface oils and dead skin cells. Normally not suitable for any skin that tends to be dry.

Non-setting/Biological masks tend to be much kinder to the skin, normally consisting of natural ingredients from plants, herbs and fruits. These treat the skin's surface, deep cleanse, but do not draw out any moisture so the skin will not feel tight afterwards.

Peel-off masks are normally light gel type formulations that set on the skin and gently peel off. Often consist of natural ingredients.

More sophisticated masks are those that create heat in the skin or those applied with specialised active ingredients. These tend to be specialised and are only used with professional facials by a Beauty Therapist. The use of a face mask at the end of a facial helps to balance the skin after the intensive treatment. It can also calm the skin and refresh it, leaving it nourished and the texture refined.

Face masks should be used at home on average once a week (this will depend on your skin type). Weekly use will help keep the skin surface free of dead skin cells (especially if used in conjunction with an exfoliant).

Why would I need to use a face mask if I am already using an exfoliant?

An exfoliant will lift off surface dead skin cells making your skin feel soft and smooth. However it does not have the ability to deep cleanse or balance your skin. A face mask has to absorb some dead skin cells before it can begin to work. If your skin routine includes an exfoliant followed by a face mask, the mask will be far more effective. The surface layer of your skin actually consists of 14 layers of dead skin cells that help protect against the invasion of bacteria. So it would not be sensible to try and remove them all. It is important to prevent build up and congestion by regularly removing the uppermost layers.

My skin feels very stretchy and tight after the use of a face mask, is this normal?

Absolutely not. The result you describe indicates that the natural moisture from your skin has been absorbed by the mask and your skin has been left dehydrated. The skin should feel refreshed and clean after a mask. Any skin that suffers from dryness, flaky patches and or tightness is not normally suitable for a setting mask

Healthy skin is beautiful skin. It is smooth, soft, and resistant to infection and will hold moisture. The benefits of facial massage will be to stimulate the functioning of the skin. This is turn will improve the texture of the skin, help remove waste products and relieve stressed skin. Facial massage is normally part of a professional facial treatment.

Facial massage is based on sweeping strokes and light kneading movements using the hands & fingers tips, this is also called Swedish massage. Facial massage may often extend to the front and back of the shoulders dependant on the type of facial you are receiving. As well being extremely beneficial for the skin, the client will find this massage very relaxing. Thumb kneading across the shoulders will help to release knotted muscle tissue fibres and break up tension.

My skin is very sensitive; would a facial massage be suitable?

Depending on how sensitive your skin is, the Therapist would not include certain movements from the massage that may irritate the sensitive area. Alternatively, the Therapist may apply pressure point movements which are often more effective on a sensitive skin. Even sensitive skins will benefit from facial massage.

Is it true that the skin can look worse after a facial?

This really depends on the skin type and how often facials are received by the client. After facial massage the stimulating effects may continue for up to 48 hours. Over this time the skin will be losing waste products onto the surface. At times a client may experience a few blotches or minor blemishes due to the deep cleansing effects of the treatment, but this is usually minimal. Once a regular skin care programme is followed and regular facials are taken the likelihood of blotches and blemishes will reduce.
